Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - Mathematical Sciences
The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Science (Hons BSc) graduates with the knowledge, specific skills, and applied and theoretical competence in various Science fields. This is to offer opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity, and valuable contributions to society.
The second purpose of the qualification is to contribute to South Africa (and other countries) by producing graduates in multiple learning fields. This aims to broaden the leadership base in innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities.
Lastly, the qualification aims to provide South Africa (and other countries) with individuals who can effectively take on the role of intellectual leaders in society, performing the constructive tasks necessary for societal development and progress.
Problem-solving: Ability to identify, analyse, formulate, and solve convergent and divergent problems related to natural and human environments.
Teamwork: Work effectively with others in various settings such as teams, groups, organizations, and communities.
Time Management: Manage and organize activities and studies responsibly and effectively within the open and distance learning context.
Information Management: Collect, analyse, organize, and critically evaluate information necessary for academic pursuits.
Communication: Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical, and language skills for oral and written presentations.
Technology Literacy: Use science and technology effectively and responsibly, considering environmental and health impacts.
Systems Thinking: Demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness of systems and acknowledge responsibilities to local and broader communities.
Formative Assessment: Includes activities in study guides, self-assessment questions, and assignments. Feedback is provided on these assessments to guide learning.
Assignments: Submission of multiple-choice questions, short questions, essays, or a combination to demonstrate understanding. Marks contribute to the final module grade.
Summative Assessment: Conducted through examinations to assess overall understanding and knowledge retention.
Feedback: Individual feedback on assignments is given to students by assessors. General feedback is provided in tutorial letters. Summative assessment feedback is available upon request.
