Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide South Africa with skilled Audiologists. The aim is to ensure effective, efficient, and accessible hearing healthcare service delivery in both the public and private sectors. Audiologists play a crucial role in various settings such as hospitals, special schools, and private practices.

Some key responsibilities of Audiologists include:

  • Conducting hearing assessments for individuals across all age groups, from infants to the elderly.
  • Performing specialized diagnostic testing to determine the nature and degree of hearing loss.
  • Fitting individuals with hearing aids to improve their communication and quality of life.
  • Implementing hearing conservation programs in industrial settings to prevent hearing loss.
  • Providing therapy and rehabilitation services to individuals with hearing impairments, including children and adults.

By training Audiologists through this qualification, South Africa can ensure that there is a competent workforce to address the diverse needs of individuals with hearing impairments. This qualification will contribute to improving the overall quality of hearing health services in the country, ultimately enhancing the well-being and quality of life of those affected by hearing loss.

Outcomes

  1. Display a sound knowledge of normal and pathological hearing.
  2. To plan and realise intervention with the client with a hearing impairment or who is at risk for the development of such an impairment.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic computer skills and will have mastered basic critical and creative thinking skills.
  4. Show that knowledge and skills are supplemented with in depth guidance in approaches and methods for analysis, theories and models for application, management and development, growth, ethical and strategy in approaching the work.
  5. Demonstrate sound knowledge of normal human hearing communication and the pathology related to this.
  6. Plan and execute prevention, identification, assessment, and therapeutic programmes with the person/persons with a hearing impairment in all contexts of his/her daily functioning.
  7. Function within the ethical context as indicated by the Health Professions Council of SA.

  • Analyse case studies: The student should be able to analyse case studies related to hearing pathology.
  • Plan and execute prevention programmes: The student should be able to plan and execute prevention programmes in hearing pathology.
  • Treat uncomplicated hearing disorders: The student should be able to treat uncomplicated hearing disorders.
  • Execute basic audiometric test battery: The student should be able to execute the basic audiometric test battery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all types of hearing disorders: The student should demonstrate knowledge of all types of hearing disorders.
  • Assess clients with a hearing impairment: The student should be able to assess clients with a hearing impairment.
  • Analyse and critically evaluate information: The student should be able to analyse and critically evaluate information pertaining to hearing impairments.
  • Integrate core knowledge with fundamental knowledge: The student should integrate core knowledge with fundamental knowledge.
  • Apply integrated knowledge: The student should apply integrated knowledge by planning and performing interventions in individual, group, and community contexts.
  • Consult and cooperate with families, communities, and professionals: The student should be able to consult and cooperate with the family of those with a hearing disorder, communities, and other professionals.
  • Plan, execute, and write up a research project: The student should be able to plan, execute, and write up a research project in the field of hearing pathology.
  • Meet Level 8 standards and levels of achievement: The student should meet the standards and levels of achievement required for "pegging" the qualification at Level 8.

These assessment criteria and modalities allow the learner to demonstrate applied competence in hearing pathology through a variety of assessment methods tailored to specific learning objectives and contexts.
