Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification:

The qualification aims to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue various career opportunities in fields such as academic and research institutions, consultancy, military affairs, diplomacy (particularly foreign affairs), national and international law, national, regional, and international organizations, multinational corporations, national and provincial governments, and non-governmental organizations.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Develop knowledge and skills for diverse career opportunities related to peace studies and international relations.
  • Contribute towards expanding capacity building in peace studies and international relations to advance South Africa's interests in regional, continental, and international affairs.
  • Demonstrate competence in specialized theoretical knowledge, practical experience, as well as analytical and technical skills in peace studies and international relations.
  • Establish linkages with individuals and organizations such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Defence, Africa Institute of South Africa, Institute for Security Studies, Institute for Global Dialogue, Nigerian Institute of International Relations, and other academic and research institutions at national and international levels. This is to promote inter- and multi-disciplinary perspectives on peace, security, unity, and sustainable development in Africa and beyond.

Overall, the qualification aims to prepare graduates to be effective contributors to the fields of peace studies and international relations, creating opportunities for them to make meaningful impacts in various sectors and play a role in promoting peace, security, and development in the region and beyond.
