Purpose and Rationale

Program Description:

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) program aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive understanding of legal concepts and principles, along with high levels of cognitive and generic skills necessary for problem-solving and practical application of legal principles. Graduates will also possess advanced written and oral communication skills, numeracy, computer literacy, and basic research methods proficiency. The program is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary for postgraduate studies and continuing personal growth.

Program Objectives:

  1. Provide graduates with a systematic and coherent body of legal knowledge and an understanding of relevant concepts and principles.
  2. Develop cognitive and generic skills such as problem-solving, practical application of principles, written and spoken communication, numeracy, and computer literacy.
  3. Enhance competence in applying knowledge through basic research methods and practice.
  4. Enable graduates to pursue further studies at a postgraduate level.
  5. Cultivate graduates with initiative, responsibility, and ethical standards necessary for promoting justice and developing legal institutions in South African society.
  6. Empower graduates to contribute to the realization of a just society based on a constitutional democracy and the rule of law within an international legal framework.

Rationale:

The LLB program aims to address the critical need for capacity building in the field of justice in South Africa. By promoting the principles outlined in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the program seeks to address historical and ongoing injustices and support the development of a just and democratic society guided by the rule of law. The program's innovative approach to legal education aims not only to impart knowledge but also essential skills and values for Lawyers operating in a democratic society. Through this initiative, the program aims to empower graduates to contribute meaningfully to the administration of justice and legal development in South African society.

Outcomes

  1. Acquire a coherent understanding of, and ability to analyse fundamental legal and related concepts, principles, theories and their relationship to values critically.
  2. Acquire knowledge and understanding of the law.
  3. Ability to acquire, analyse and comment upon the law critically.
  4. Acquire knowledge and understanding of, and ability to critically analyse and comment upon current and controversial legal issues.
  5. Develop an understanding of how legal principles operate in practice.
  6. Develop the ability to explain, critically analyse and comment upon the relationship between law and society.
  7. Conduct research using appropriate techniques such as literature review, electronic information search and retrieval, statute and case analysis.
  8. Act responsibly and ethically as a researcher and scholar.
  9. Understand, interpret and apply relevant conventions and guidelines applicable to research and scholarship.

  5. Interpersonal Skills:

    • Provide evidence of sufficient skills to interact successfully with colleagues, other role players in the legal process, and members of other professions and disciplines.
  6. Computer Skills:

    • Demonstrate the computer skills required in a legal environment.
  7. Learning Strategies:

    • Successfully use different learning strategies and integrate these strategies to organize one's own life.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment:

    • Ongoing formative assessment should be conducted to provide feedback on learners' progress in achieving specific learning outcomes.
  • Summative Assessment:

    • Judgement of learning in relation to the Exit Level Outcomes should be done through integrated assessments that test the learners' ability to integrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes represented by the Exit Level Outcomes as a whole.
