Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology

Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - Life Sciences

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Information

Purpose:
After completing this qualification, students will have a broader knowledge of the Biotechnology environment. They will be equipped with the ability to apply various techniques used in the Biotechnology context, exercise critical and innovative thinking skills in the industry, and have an in-depth understanding of good manufacturing practice and standardization in the manufacturing process. Students will be able to write validation and technical reports, contribute to the development and management of Biotechnology-related businesses at both community and industrial levels, and demonstrate fundamental knowledge of research methodology.

Rationale:
The Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology, a Level 7 qualification with a minimum of 120 credits, replaces the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) qualification to comply with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) set forth by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This qualification enhances knowledge in Biotechnology and offers horizontal and vertical articulation possibilities. It adds modules that improve employability by providing industry-specific skills not previously included in the BTech program, such as Laboratory Management and Compliance. Students completing this program gain a competitive advantage due to practical laboratory experience acquired through modules like 'Biotechniques'. The Research Methodology module prepares students for advanced studies by honing their research proposal and report writing skills. The unique and sought-after skills acquired through this qualification make graduates highly desirable in the industry, leading to anticipated increased student enrollment compared to the current BTech qualification. To successfully complete the program, students must attain a minimum of sixty percent in core modules of their final undergraduate year, ensuring alignment with industry requirements in a specialized niche area.
