Human and Social Studies - Religious and Ethical Foundations of Society
The Bachelor of Theology aims to equip learners with the ability to critically apply focused analysis, knowledge, and skills in serving and leading in various contexts such as public schools, Christian communities, Bible translation, community organizations, and society. This integrated program provides learners with foundational knowledge in biblical and theological studies, including biblical languages, bible translation, music ministry, child and youth work, and pastoral counseling.
The primary goal is to provide learners with advanced knowledge, research skills, and applied competence in disciplines such as Dogmatics, Catechetics, Church Polity, Ethics, Homiletics, Church History, Liturgics, Missiology, and various biblical studies to enable them to conduct independent research and serve as leaders, educators, and facilitators in their communities and society.
The Bachelor of Theology allows learners to specialize in biblical studies, pastoral ministry, pastoral counseling, or cross-cultural missions, preparing them for roles in Bible teaching and leadership within pastoral or cross-cultural contexts. While most denominations recognize this qualification as meeting academic requirements for ordination, additional training may be necessary to fulfill specific denominational prerequisites.
Mission organizations also acknowledge this qualification as suitable training in biblical studies for missionary work, particularly in roles involving Bible teaching. The program's flexible structure caters to individuals interested in teaching Religious Instruction and Life Orientation in secondary schools, adapting to the specific needs of learners in various contexts.
Integrated Assessment: Continuous formative assessment strategies are integrated by nature and take the form of assignments, tests, and a mini-dissertation. Formative assessment accounts for 70% of the module mark. Integrated summative assessment in the form of a formal examination constitutes 30% of the pass mark.
Other Assessment Methods: Oral presentations of smaller integrated research projects or seminars may be required, both individually and in a group context. These presentations help evaluate learners' ability to apply integrated knowledge and advanced skills effectively, ensuring they are well-prepared for the workplace.
Work Integrated Learning: The qualification includes a Work Integrated Learning component, providing learners with practical experience and the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. This component further enhances their readiness for the workplace.
