Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to:

  1. Consolidate and deepen students' knowledge in their selected specialisation.
  2. Develop research capacity in methodology and techniques specific to the specialisation.
  3. Prepare students for advanced Postgraduate studies.
  4. Equip students with theoretical engagement, intellectual independence, research skills, and specialised knowledge relevant to their chosen specialisation.
  5. Enable students to conduct and report on a research project addressing contemporary issues.
  6. Facilitate professional and personal intellectual development for further Postgraduate study at Level 9 and higher.

Rationale:

  • Developed to comply with the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications.
  • Addresses challenges in education in South Africa: low educator knowledge, limited management capacity, inclusive education, research capacity, etc.
  • Creates a pathway for educational researchers and strengthens knowledge and skills in the education sector.
  • Designed to deepen knowledge, develop research capacity, and provide a foundation in educational themes, perspectives, and research methods.
  • Based on feedback from stakeholders through a 2015 situation analysis.
  • Targeted at students interested in pursuing Postgraduate studies to enhance professional skills and initiate a research career.
  • Serves as the first Postgraduate qualification after an initial teacher qualification at NQF level 7.
  • Aims to address challenges in education that impact industry, economy, societal issues, etc., by producing skilled education specialists.

The BEd Honours qualification plays a crucial role in improving education sector capabilities and addressing broader societal challenges in South Africa.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate integrated knowledge and critical understanding of subject matter within the field of specialisation, theories and methods of research within that specialisation, and how to evaluate and apply such knowledge and skills within the context of that specialisation.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to engage with and address ethical issues in the teaching and learning of, as well as research in, the selected field of specialisation.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to use a range of specialised skills to identify, investigate, critically analyse and understand, evaluate, address and solve complex real-life problems regarding critical matters and problems in the selected field of specialisation, in a creative and coherent manner.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to verbally and in writing formulate, present and communicate insightful and creative academic and professional discourse, offering creative insights, rigorous interpretations and solutions to issues in the teaching and learning of the selected field of specialisation, use appropriate media and communication and information technology as well as other appropriate research methods.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to effectively operate as a member of a team to solve problems and address challenges in the teaching and learning of the selected field of specialisation, and to assume responsibility for task-specific objectives, appropriately using relevant and multiple resources.
  6. Use the assessment strategies which effectively address personal, professional and lifelong learning as well as on-going learning needs of others.
