Bachelor of Radiography in Diagnostics

Health Sciences and Social Services - Curative Health

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Radiography in Diagnostics qualification aims to develop competent professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary for radiography. Through practical experience in the appropriate workplace settings, holders of this qualification will demonstrate proficiency in management and research, enabling them to work independently and in supervisory roles within healthcare teams. This qualification equips professionals to effectively integrate theoretical knowledge, proven techniques, practical experience, and necessary skills to solve well-defined and abstract problems in the field of radiography. Moreover, learners will cultivate the ability to reflect on their practice and engage in lifelong learning, ultimately benefiting the community and society. Successful completion of this program will allow graduates to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as Radiographers, providing assurance to the community that they will practice within the stipulated scope determined by the Statutory Health Council.

Rationale:

The Bachelor of Radiography (B Rad) program was designed to replace the National Diploma: Radiography and the Baccalaureus Technologiae: Radiography in alignment with the National Department of Health's policy for offering professional Bachelor's degrees for healthcare professionals. These policy requirements adhere to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework. The review of healthcare qualifications by the Professional Board for Radiography and Clinical Technology at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) was initiated to ensure compliance with national standards and policies outlined by the Department of Health.

Radiography is considered a scarce skills profession in South Africa and is listed on the Department of Labour's 2007 National Scarce Skills List. Additionally, radiographers are classified as "designated health professionals working group in public health sector hospitals/institutions" as per agreement no. 1 of 2004 by the Public Health and Welfare Sectoral Bargaining Council. Given the demand for qualified radiographers in the country, the Bachelor of Radiography in Diagnostics program plays a vital role in enhancing standards within the radiography field. Graduates of the previous qualifications have had favorable employment prospects due to the national demand for Radiographers. The Bachelor of Radiography in Diagnostics is positioned to continue meeting this demand in the future effectively.
