Purpose and Rationale

Bachelor of Speech Language Pathology

Purpose: The Bachelor of Speech Language Pathology aims to provide ongoing training and skills development to healthcare professionals within the ECDoH service delivery model. This program will enhance district support by offering content grounded in knowledge and learning. Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in theory of speech-language pathology practice, prevention, identification, assessment, and management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of normal development foundations related to speech-language pathology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pathology foundations related to speech-language pathology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of managing clients with speech-language pathologies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of promoting ethical and professional speech-language behavior through education.
  • Demonstrate research skills in individuals with speech-language pathologies, including conducting basic research.

Rationale: South Africa is a multicultural and multilingual society with 11 official languages, including indigenous languages like lsiXhosa, spoken by a significant portion of the population in the Eastern Cape. Despite the linguistic diversity, the majority of speech and language professionals in the country are English or Afrikaans-speaking, leading to services being provided across linguistic and cultural barriers. As a result, individuals speaking indigenous languages are often underserved due to the lack of relevant assessments and therapeutic materials.

To address this gap, it is crucial to develop a curriculum that includes local languages and recruits learners proficient in isiXhosa into Speech Language Pathology and Audiology programs. By doing so, we can promote and enhance the development of human resources and services in the region, ultimately bridging the gap in speech and language services for indigenous language speakers in South Africa.
