Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose: The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of selected fields of study in the humanities (e.g. languages and literature, history, history of art, philosophy and ethics) and selected related fields of study (social sciences, psychology, geography, Mathematics). The qualification also includes methodological approaches and theoretical orientations applied to the South African context. Learners will demonstrate initiative and responsibility, display professional and ethical behaviour in their roles within the economy and culture, and who can function as intellectual leaders within their society. These learners will increase, widen and transform the leadership base in South Africa, both for innovation and science-based economic and research development.

Rationale: The rationale behind a combination of modules from the Humanities and non-Humanities is to combine ordinary skills usually associated with the Humanities viz. interpretative, critical, and creative thinking with knowledge and skills from other fields. This qualification thus combines the typical Humanities with several disciplines to give learners the advantage of the ordinary powers of the Humanities. Learners will be able to find employment as sociologists, labour relations managers, and psychologists.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

The qualification incorporates formative, summative, and integrated assessments over the three-year study period. These assessments include writing tasks, practical assignments, class tests, and examinations across all modules in the qualification.

Furthermore, the learner's ability to communicate effectively through oral and written means, utilizing suitable IT tools, is evaluated. Additionally, the assessment measures the learner's proficiency in computer literacy.

The assessment methodology places a strong emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and interpretation within the diverse subject areas covered by the qualification.
