Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide a broad, well-rounded education in Theology. It aims to equip learners with the knowledge, theory, and methodology of theological disciplines. This enables them to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in a professional context that requires:

  • Decision-making based on a range of skills in identifying, conceptualizing, and implementing methods of inquiry to address problems in various situations.
  • Accurate interrogation of multiple sources of knowledge and evaluation of knowledge and processes of knowledge production.
  • Use of professional discourses to communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Evaluation of arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts, and data to make judgments and identify solutions.
  • Identification and address ethical issues based on critical reflection on different ethical value systems.
  • Critical review of information gathering, evaluation, and management processes in a professional context to develop creative responses to problems.
  • Effective operation within a religion-based system or managing the system based on an understanding of roles and relationships.
  • Understanding the consequences of generated solutions within the professional context, taking full accountability for decisions and actions.

In addition, the qualification prepares learners for master-level study by providing them with research capacity in methodology and research techniques.

Rationale:

This qualification meets the need for a professional qualification with a vocational orientation. It enables learners to perform effectively in faith communities, churches, comparable organizations, societies, and communities. The qualification prepares learners for a professional, constructive, and coherent ministry that goes beyond serving faith communities. It includes ministering to people in health and social care contexts, as well as leadership roles in broader situations requiring personal responsibility, decision-making, and the capability to evaluate different problem-solving approaches.

Learners will possess the qualities necessary for employment that demands initiative and responsibility in diverse contexts. Additionally, they will be prepared for postgraduate studies in Theology or appropriate postgraduate professional training in various professions.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a coherent understanding by way of reflection, interpreting and arguing of the relevant theories, research methodologies, methods and techniques.
  2. Demonstrate argued acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge of Theology.
  3. Accurately interrogate multiple sources of knowledge and to evaluate knowledge and processes of knowledge production.
  4. Analyse and critically evaluate of differentiated sources of knowledge (including scholarship and primary sources).
  5. Describe and comment upon particular aspects of current research.
  6. Demonstrate the capability to devise and sustain arguments, and/or to solve problems, using ideas, methods and/or techniques.
  7. Apply skills to critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data to make judgements, and to frame appropriate questions to achieve a solution - or identify a range of solutions - to a problem.
  8. Operate effectively within a system, or manage the system based on an understanding of the roles and relationships between elements within the system.
  9. Take full responsibility for own work, decision making and use of resources, and full accountability for the decisions and actions of others where appropriate.
  10. Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

For the purposes of this document, it should be noted that the rationale, purpose, and specific outcomes of the qualification are carefully formulated in a generic way to incorporate the whole range of theological disciplines (i.e. Old Testament, New Testament, Ecclesiology, Historical Theology, Systematic Theology, Missiology, Practical Theology, Religion Studies) offered by the qualification. To verify whether learners have acquired the stated (generic) outcomes of the qualification, an integrated assessment approach is required.

In this regard, linked to the specific outcomes of modules and exit-level outcomes of this discipline-directed qualification, a selection and/or combination of formative, summative, or continuous assessments are employed. Assessment methods include assignments, discussions, written examinations, and oral examinations, as well as external assessments.
