Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills, applied competence, and the necessary attitudes in the fields associated with commerce and industry. This preparation aims to enable them to be lifelong learners, entrepreneurs/employable workers, and contributors to society and the business community. Furthermore, the qualification is designed to equip learners with the entrepreneurial and business skills needed to develop and manage sustainable businesses that actively contribute to job creation. Qualifying learners will be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and applied competence in entrepreneurial skills, with a focus on both theory and practical application to efficiently and effectively operate their businesses.

Rationale:

The aim of this qualification is to cultivate a pool of skilled individuals in the field of entrepreneurship in South Africa and on a global scale. By specializing in entrepreneurship, students will be equipped to lead innovative and knowledge-based economic endeavors, expanding the leadership base of both economic and scholarly activity. Ultimately, the qualification seeks to contribute towards the development of a workforce capable of driving economic growth through entrepreneurial initiatives.

Outcomes

  1. Identify, analyse, formulate, and serve the commercial and economic needs of individuals and society creatively and innovatively.
  2. Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, community, and contribute to the group output in tasks growing out of the business, commerce and management fields.
  3. Manage and organise her or his activities and life responsibility and effectively, including her or his studies within the distance context.
  4. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information as required.
  5. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of written presentation.
  6. Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health and well-being of others, in community, national and global contexts.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation, and by acknowledging their responsibilities to those in the local and broader community.

    • Through case studies and research projects, they identify needs and opportunities in business and propose ways to serve societal needs.
  2. People Skills and Group Interaction:

    • Students demonstrate 'people skills' such as tolerance, empathy, and effective communication in group situations.
    • They respect diverse opinions, lead effectively, and organize groups for successful interactions, reporting on these experiences.
  3. Study Skills and Learning Strategies:

    • Students demonstrate study skills by organizing study plans, using various learning strategies, and coping with self-discipline in distance learning.
    • They assess strengths and weaknesses, think independently, and offer evidence to support decisions.
  4. Research Skills:

    • Students demonstrate basic research skills by effectively using library and other resources for individual and research needs.
    • They integrate information from various sources, act responsibly as scholars, and adhere to academic conventions in referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
  5. Communication and Presentation:

    • Students communicate ideas with supporting evidence, responsibly use others' ideas, and follow language conventions in written and oral communication.
    • They use visuals, numbers, statistics accurately, and recognize communication limitations to seek appropriate help.
  6. Attitude towards Scholarship and Technology:

    • Students demonstrate respect for science, technology, and ethics, using appropriate technology to suit individual needs.
    • They show consideration for sustainability and responsible use of natural resources.
  7. Prior Knowledge and Experience Integration:

    • Students connect theoretical knowledge to personal contexts, drawing upon prior knowledge and experiences when analyzing the world around them.
    • They look beyond disciplinary boundaries for solutions, follow an integrated approach to learning, and apply systems thinking to solve problems.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Learning and assessment are integrated, with self-assessment tasks and feedback provided in study guides and assignments focusing on smaller sections of work.
  • Summative Assessment: Examinations or equivalent assessments evaluate a representative selection of outcomes, testing students' ability to manage and integrate knowledge to achieve module outcomes.
