Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale:

The purpose of this qualification is to enable students to pursue a career as financial accountants in industry and commerce. Additionally, it provides a pathway for students who wish to further their studies to become professional accountants (PAs) and members of various professional accounting bodies such as the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), chartered accountants (CA(SA)) and members of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), certified chartered accountants and members of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), as well as registered auditors (RAs) and members of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA). This qualification equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field of financial accounting and prepare them for a successful career in the accounting profession.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Analyse real life situations to identify needs and opportunities: Students should be able to analyze real-life situations to identify needs and opportunities for strategic solutions.
  • Choose correct procedures to solve specific business problems: Students must be able to select the appropriate procedures to solve specific business problems.
  • Organise resources to achieve the maximum output with limited resources: Students should demonstrate the ability to organize resources effectively to achieve maximum output with limited resources.
  • Apply appropriate principles to situations: Application of appropriate principles to real-life or simulated scenarios/case studies is required.
  • Evaluate results of application: Students need to evaluate the results of applying solutions to problems.
  • Maintain required professional standards: Show how solutions meet and maintain professional standards as per external regulating bodies.
  • Discuss and present information: Present information in appropriate ways such as numerically, verbally, graphically, etc.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Interpret current economic events: Interpret specific current economic events and apply economic principles to real-life situations.
  • Relate learning from experience to academic knowledge: Relate learning from individual experience to academic knowledge and vice versa.
  • Interpret local conditions in relation to international conditions: Interpret local economic conditions in comparison to international conditions.
  • Reflect on personal experience and academic disciplines: Reflect on personal experiences and academic disciplines to make connections between past, present, and future contexts.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Evaluate economic and efficient use of resources: Evaluate the economic and efficient use and flow of resources within and to an organization.
  • Identify critical areas for resource allocation: Identify critical areas for resource allocation and management within an organization.
  • Convey findings and recommendations: Communicate findings and recommendations to appropriate levels of management in written and/or oral form.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Use disciplinary and interdisciplinary information: Use information related to socio-economic and social issues to explore relationships between economic and socio-cultural situations.
  • Produce critical texts: Produce critical texts that integrate information from various sources and reflect on knowledge and information.
  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate information: Gather, analyze, organize, and evaluate information from various sources to solve problems in specific disciplines.
  • Apply past and present knowledge: Apply past and present knowledge to authentic and simulated scenarios to solve problems in future contexts.

  • Relate information from different disciplines: Relate information from one discipline to others and identify different cultural and economic systems.
  • Reconcile different management styles: Reconcile different management styles at different levels within an organization.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Includes activities in study guides, self-assessment questions, and written assignments.
  • Submission of Assignments: Students must submit at least two assignments per module.
  • Feedback: Feedback on activities and assignments is provided in study guides and tutorial letters. Individual feedback on assignments is given by assessors.
