Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

  • The primary purpose of these qualifications is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (Honours BA) (Gender Studies) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills and theoretical competence in environmental management.
  • The second purpose of this qualifications is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with professional environmental management graduates with appropriate skills, managerial and leadership acumen to reach sound and responsible environmental decision making; following the precautionary principle and sustainable development principles.
  • Graduates are expected to serve in both public and private sectors contributing to important environmental decision-making processes.
  • The third purpose is to equip graduates with innovativeness, problem-solving competencies, and the ability to operate in multidisciplinary teams for managing environmental matters.
  • Furthermore, graduates are expected to engage in scientific research in environmental management to resolve environmental issues and contribute to new knowledge in the field.
  • This qualification aims to enable students to work effectively in the field of Environmental Management by providing them with the necessary knowledge and competencies.

Rationale:

  • The programme has been redesigned to empower students to act as gender change agents within their own contexts, communities, and institutional settings.

Outcomes

  1. Identify, analyse, formulate and solve convergent and divergent problems and issues related to the natural environment.
  2. Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, community, and contribute to the group output in tasks within the field of environmental management.
  3. Manage and organise her or his activities and life responsibly and effectively, including her or his studies within the open and distance learning context.
  4. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information, as required for Bachelor of Arts (Gender Studies).
  5. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and for written presentation, often in pieces of sustained discourse.
  6. Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health and well-being of others, in community, national and global context.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation, and by acknowledging their responsibilities to those locally and the broader community.

  • Identify, analyse and solve complex and advanced abstract problems by drawing on own experience and theoretical knowledge.
  • Offer informed suggestions or generate alternative strategies for dealing with problems at different levels.
  • Critically evaluate theoretical standpoints and compare them to personal views.
  • Support views with evidence from theoretical knowledge base or experiential base.
  • Analyse global, national, and local community problems, needs, and opportunities.

  • Use 'people skills' in group situations.
  • Demonstrate respect and tolerance for diverse opinions.
  • Undertake theoretical and/or practical projects for successful interaction with others.
  • Utilize advanced communication skills within the group.
  • Act as supportive followers and participants in group activities.
  • Organize effective working groups and communicate evidence of group interactions.

  • Demonstrate theoretical skills and learning strategies.

  • Communicate ideas logically with supporting evidence.

  • Identify and explain discipline-specific jargon.

  • Utilize natural resources sustainably.
  • Show respect and ethical attitude towards science, technology, and environment.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Connect abstract knowledge of theory to individual contexts.
  • Draw upon prior knowledge, personal experience, and abstract knowledge when investigating and analyzing.
  • Look for solutions beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative assessment through written assignments.
  • Summative assessment through written exams and portfolios.
  • Research article requires extensive research.
  • Formative assessment based on draft papers.
  • Summative assessment based on completed research article.

These criteria are essential for evaluating students' capabilities and readiness to exit the program successfully.
