Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale:

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills, and theoretical competence focusing on or within a particular discipline or within an interdisciplinary framework to prepare them for specialist training at an advanced level.

A second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with graduates who have in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems and to apply their skills in finding solutions to those problems, especially within unfamiliar contexts.

A third purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with people who can demonstrate thorough familiarity with a particular discipline or interdisciplinary framework and have the ability to perform independently as intellectual leaders in their society.

Outcomes

  1. Engage in critical thinking and problem solving in studying topics of a complex and specialised nature.
  2. Reflect on their own knowledge and practice in the light of the theory and practice in Public Administration.
  3. Conduct research.
  4. Communicate research results.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Identify, analyse, formulate and solve problems related to natural and human environments.
  2. Work effectively with others in teams, groups, organizations, or communities.
  3. Manage and organize activities responsibly and effectively, including studies in open and distance learning.
  4. Collect, analyse, organize, and critically evaluate information relevant to the pursuit of the BA Hons (Afrikaans).
  5. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical, and/or language skills in oral and written presentations.
  6. Use science and technology effectively and responsibly, considering environmental and health aspects in a global context.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of interconnected systems and responsibilities to local and broader communities.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Includes activities, self-assessment questions, and written assignments (multiple-choice, short questions, essays) contributing at least 20% to the final module mark.
  • Feedback:
    • Provided in study guides and tutorial letters for activities and self-assessment questions.
    • Individual feedback on assignments given by assessors, while general feedback provided in tutorial letters.
  • Summative Assessment: Conducted through two-to three-hour examinations per module.
  • Feedback on Summative Assessment: Provided to individual students upon request.
