Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale:

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills, and theoretical competence focusing on or within a particular discipline or within an interdisciplinary framework to prepare them for specialist training at an advanced level.

A second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with graduates who have in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems and to apply their skills in finding solutions to those problems, especially within unfamiliar contexts.

A third purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with people who can demonstrate thorough familiarity with a particular discipline or interdisciplinary framework and have the ability to perform independently as intellectual leaders in their society.

  1. Reflect on their own knowledge and practice in the light of the theory and practice in Public Administration.
  2. Conduct research.
  3. Communicate research results.

    • Identify, analyse, formulate, and solve convergent and divergent problems related to natural and human environments.

    • Manage and organise activities and life responsibly and effectively, including studies within the open and distance learning context.
  4. Information Handling:

    • Collect, analyse, organise, and critically evaluate information required for the pursuit of the Bachelor of Arts Honours (BA Hons) (Theory of Literature).
  5. Communication Skills:

    • Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical, and/or language skills in oral and written presentations, often in pieces of sustained discourse.
  6. Technology Use:

    • Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health and well-being of others in various contexts.
  7. Systems Thinking:

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems, acknowledging responsibilities to local and broader communities.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment:

    • Conducted through activities in study guides, self-assessment questions, and written assignments.
    • Assignments include MCQs, short questions, essays, or a combination based on the study level.
    • Assignments contribute a percentage towards the final module mark.
    • Feedback provided in study guides, tutorial letters, and marked assignments.
  • Summative Assessment:

    • Conducted through two to three-hour examinations per module.
    • Feedback on examinations provided to individual students upon request.
