Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialized skills, and theoretical competence focusing on a particular discipline or interdisciplinary framework. This prepares them for specialist training at an advanced level.

A second purpose of the qualification is to equip graduates with in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems. They can then apply their skills to finding solutions, especially within unfamiliar contexts, benefitting South Africa and other countries.

Thirdly, the qualification aims to produce individuals who demonstrate thorough familiarity with a specific discipline or interdisciplinary framework. These graduates will have the ability to function independently as intellectual leaders in society. Their training prepares them to contribute effectively to their communities and beyond.

Outcomes

  1. Engage in critical thinking and problem solving in studying topics of a complex and specialised nature.
  2. Reflect on their own knowledge and practice in the light of the theory and practice in Public Administration.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Problem-solving: Identify, analyse, formulate, and solve convergent and divergent problems related to natural and human environments.
  2. Teamwork: Work effectively with others in various settings.
  3. Time Management: Manage and organize activities and studies responsibly within an open and distance learning context.
  4. Information Handling: Collect, analyse, organize, and critically evaluate information pertinent to the BA Hons (Theory of Literature).
  5. Communication Skills: Communicate effectively through oral and written presentations.
  6. Technology Usage: Utilize science and technology responsibly for the environment and well-being of others.
  7. Systems Thinking: Demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness of problem-solving contexts and acknowledge responsibilities to local and broader communities.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Includes activities, self-assessment questions, and written assignments.
  • Assignments: Can be in the form of MCQs, short questions, essays, or a combination based on the study level.
  • Contribution to Final Mark: Assignments contribute a minimum percentage to the final mark, with the rest coming from examinations.
  • Feedback: Provided in study guides, tutorial letters, and individually on marked assignments.
  • Summative Assessment: Conducted through two to three-hour examinations per module.
  • Feedback on Examinations: Given to individual students upon request.
