Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialized skills, and theoretical competence focusing on a particular discipline or within an interdisciplinary framework. This prepares them for specialist training at an advanced level.

The second purpose is to equip graduates with in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems, as well as apply their skills to find solutions within unfamiliar contexts.

Lastly, the qualification aims to produce individuals who can demonstrate thorough familiarity with a specific discipline or interdisciplinary framework, and have the capacity to function independently as intellectual leaders in society, benefiting South Africa and other countries.

Outcomes

  1. Identify, analyse, formulate and solve convergent and divergent problems and issues related to the natural environment.
  2. Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, community, and contribute to the group output in tasks within the field of environmental management.
  3. Manage and organise her or his activities and life responsibly and effectively, including her or his studies within the open and distance learning context.
  4. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information, as required for Bachelor of Arts (Integrated Organisational Communication).
  5. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and for written presentation, often in pieces of sustained discourse.
  6. Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health and well-being of others, in community, national and global context.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recogniing that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation, and by acknowledging their responsibilities to those locally and the broader community.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Identify, analyse and solve complex and advanced abstract problems by drawing on own experience and theoretical knowledge.
  • Offer informed suggestions or generate alternative strategies for dealing with problems at various levels.
  • Critically evaluate various theoretical standpoints and compare them to personal views.
  • Offer evidence from theoretical knowledge base or experiential base to support views.
  • Analyse global, national, and local community in terms of problems, needs, and opportunities.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Use and propagate 'people skills' (tolerance, empathy, listening skills, etc.) in group situations.
  • Demonstrate respect for others' opinions through reporting without bias.
  • Demonstrate tolerance of diversity through reporting without bias.
  • Undertake projects to provide evidence of successful interaction with others.
  • Use advanced communication skills within the group.
  • Organise effective working groups and communicate evidence of group interactions.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Demonstrate theoretical skills and learning strategies.
  • Organise study plans and engage in effective time management.
  • Assess own strengths and weaknesses and develop organisational strategies.
  • Think independently and offer sustained theoretical evidence to support decisions.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Communicate ideas logically and provide supporting evidence.
  • Evaluate conclusions and premises in academic arguments and produce sound arguments.
  • Use language competently and show awareness of written conventions.
  • Use appropriate models of organisation and presentation as required.
  • Use statistics effectively in support of ideas.
  • Identify and illustrate discipline-specific jargon.
  • Analyse, evaluate, and critique ideas of others.

  • Demonstrate responsible attitude towards scholarship and technology.
  • Use scientific methods of investigation, testing, and evaluation.

  • Use natural resources in a sustainable way.
  • Show respect for and a responsible/ethical attitude towards science, technology, and environment.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Demonstrate prior knowledge and experience relevant to the discipline.
  • Connect abstract knowledge of theory to individual contexts.
  • Draw upon prior knowledge and personal experience when investigating and analysing.
  • Look beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries for solutions.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Integrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for applied competence.

Formative Assessment:

  • Continuous feedback on smaller sections of work and limited outcomes.

Summative Assessment:

  • Examinations or equivalent assessment to determine representative selection of outcomes.
  • Tests ability to manage and integrate knowledge to achieve module outcomes.
