Bachelor of Arts Honours in Ancient Near Eastern Studies

Human and Social Studies - Traditions History and Legacies

Purpose and Rationale

The purpose of the qualification is to unravel the value of the Ancient Near Eastern material culture for the modern civilization. It provides students with the opportunity to engage with the interpretations, methods, and techniques of this ancient material in a responsible manner. It builds on the undergraduate knowledge, skills, and competencies enabling students to achieve intellectual independence.

The qualification equips students to conduct independent research, develop reading, writing, interpretive, and evaluative skills necessary to write articles as a preamble towards Master's and Doctoral research. By doing so, students can contribute to exposing the modern world to the treasures of the ancient world, with a focus on the Middle Eastern region.

Students demonstrate autonomy of learning by showcasing their ability to evaluate their own learning and identify areas for improvement within a structured learning environment. Through both formative and summative assessments, students are empowered to operate in complex, unfamiliar contexts that demand personal responsibility and initiative. They learn to accurately self-evaluate and take charge of their professional and academic development, managing learning tasks independently, professionally, and ethically.
