Business, Commerce and Management Studies - Public Administration
Purpose: The purpose of the Bachelor of Admin in Public Administration qualification is to empower students with the ability to use enquiry and innovation to serve the public sector through an understanding of the South African developmental state and its related public management functions. It aims to develop important generic skills such as observation, problem-solving, effective communication, analysis, and critical thinking applied to related fields of study.
Rationale: The Bachelor of Admin in Public Administration qualification is an essential contributor to the realization of South Africa as a developmental state. The qualification provides an appropriate foundation as it was designed with consideration given to employment possibilities and the labor needs of the country. Additionally, the qualification prepares students for postgraduate study in various specializations. There is a strong need to empower students with a broader range of fundamental skills so that they can focus on related fields when pursuing further studies with an Honours Degree.
Systematic and integrated knowledge and understanding: The ability to analyze, evaluate, and apply fundamental terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules, and theories in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes will be assessed.
Discipline-related methods of scientific inquiry: The student should demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate methods of scientific inquiry and independently validate, evaluate, and manage sources of information.
Problem-solving and change introduction: Critical reflection on, understanding, and application of appropriate methods to resolve complex discipline-related problems and introduce change within related practice will be evaluated.
Professional and ethical behavior: The assessment will focus on professional and ethical behavior within academic and discipline-related environments, with sensitivity towards societal and cultural considerations.
Communication skills: The ability to effectively communicate scientific understanding and own opinions/ideas in written or oral arguments, using appropriate discipline-related and academic discourse as well as technology, will be assessed.
Teamwork and self-directed learning: Effective functioning as a member and/or leader of a team or group in scientific projects or investigations, with self-directed management of learning activities and responsibility for own learning progress, will be evaluated.
Formative and Summative Assessments: Formative, summative, and integrated assessments will be conducted throughout the three years of study. These assessments will include written tests, practical assignments, and examinations covering various disciplines included in the qualification.
Student Skills Assessment: The student's ability to communicate orally and in written format, using appropriate Information Technology (IT), as well as computer literacy, will be assessed.
