Purpose and Rationale

Programme Overview

Purpose: The purpose of this programme is to train graduates in Computer Science and/or Informatics in an outcomes-based manner. The goal is to ensure their immediate employability as Computer Scientists and programmers in various organizations. Additionally, it aims to prepare them for further studies in Master of Commerce in Informatics and Computer Science and/or Informatics. The advanced training in Informatics builds upon a strong undergraduate foundation in Computer Sciences and/or Informatics to meet the demands of the job market in South Africa. Students will also be equipped with research methodology skills to pursue further specialization in their studies.

Rationale: There is a pressing demand in South Africa and globally for more scientists and information technologists. It is crucial to increase the number of students enrolled in science and technology programmes in Higher Education. This honours programme is designed to address this need by fostering a curriculum that promotes inquiry, innovation, and scientific knowledge within the context of social development. The programme aims to cultivate essential skills such as observation, problem-solving, effective communication (both personal and interpersonal), analysis, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking among students. These skills are essential for success in the field of Computer Science and Informatics.

  • Continuous formative assessment strategies: Assignments, portfolios, tests, etc.
  • Integrated summative assessments: Formal examinations, mini-dissertation, projects, reports.
  • Oral presentations: Presenting smaller integrated research projects or seminars individually or in a group.
  • Continuous assessment: Application of integrated knowledge and advanced skills to ensure workplace competence.
