Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide students with specialised knowledge of advanced tourism management concepts, theories, models, laws, principles, skills, research methods, and applied competence enabling them to pursue rewarding careers in the changing tourism environment within the national and international context.
Rationale:
This qualification aims to provide South Africa with graduates who are competent practitioners in the field of Tourism Management with the capacity to understand and function effectively in the economy and research problems associated with tourism and the management thereof.
The exit level outcomes are achieved by integrating the associated assessment criteria throughout the learning process. This integration involves a systematic understanding and analysis of fundamental terms, concepts, principles, and theories within the discipline. Students demonstrate their ability to apply discipline-specific methods of inquiry, critically evaluate sources of information, and manage information effectively.
Furthermore, the application of appropriate methods to solve complex discipline-related problems and drive change is reflected upon critically. Students exhibit professional and ethical behavior in academic and discipline-related settings, while also showing sensitivity to societal and cultural considerations.
Communication of scientific understanding, personal opinions, and arguments is done through appropriate discipline-related discourse, whether in written or oral form, using technology where necessary. Additionally, students demonstrate effective teamwork and leadership skills in scientific projects, taking responsibility for their own learning progress through self-directed management of activities.
The institution's Assessment and Moderation Policy ensures that assessment criteria are aligned with SAQA Level Descriptors and clearly communicated to students. Formative assessments such as class tests and homework assignments are regularly conducted. Summative assessments, focusing on key qualification outcomes, are integrated into the assessment activities. This includes integrated assessment across modules through a comprehensive project assignment.
