Business, Commerce and Management Studies - Finance Economics and Accounting
The purpose of this qualification is to provide students with specialised knowledge of advanced concepts, theories, models, laws, principles, skills, research methods and applied competence in the field of finance. This will enable them to pursue rewarding careers in the changing economic environment within the national and international context.
This qualification aims to provide South Africa with graduates who are not only competent in the field of finance with the capacity to understand and function effectively in the economy, but can also research problems associated with the economy of the country.
Systematic Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrating knowledge, understanding, analysis, evaluation, and application of fundamental terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules, and theories.
Scientific Inquiry: Applying appropriate discipline-related methods of scientific inquiry, validating, evaluating, and managing sources of information independently.
Problem Solving: Reflecting critically, understanding, and applying methods/practices to resolve complex discipline-related problems and introduce change within related practice.
Professional and Ethical Behavior: Demonstrating professional and ethical behavior within an academic and discipline-related environment, considering societal and cultural aspects.
Effective Communication: Effectively communicating scientific understanding, opinions, and ideas in written or oral arguments using appropriate discipline-related and academic discourse, as well as technology.
Teamwork and Self-Management: Functioning effectively as a member/leader of a team/group in scientific projects or investigations, with self-directed management of learning activities and responsibility for own learning progress.
Policy Alignment: Stipulated in the Assessment and Moderation Policy of the North West University (NWU), alignment with SAQA Level Descriptors for clear communication of outcomes and assessment criteria to students.
Assessment Components: Inclusion of at least one opportunity for integrated assessment focusing on key outcomes of the qualification.
Formative Assessment: Utilization of class tests and integrated assignments (up to 50% of pass mark) for ongoing feedback and learning support.
Summative Assessment: Consisting of 2 to 3-hour written examinations per module (50% weight) for comprehensive evaluation.
Research Component: Involving a research report or mini-dissertation (credit value of 32) to be submitted under supervisor guidance as part of integrated assessment.
