Purpose and Rationale

Postgraduate Qualification in Industrial and Organisational Psychology

Purpose:

This Postgraduate qualification in Industrial and Organisational Psychology aims to equip students with a strong foundation in theory and practical application within the business environment. It is a specialized qualification at Postgraduate level, intended to prepare students for further research-based studies at Level 9. The primary goal is to enhance and deepen students' knowledge in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, focusing on developing their research skills and understanding of methodology within the field. The modules align with current academic research trends and the growing need for quantitative analysis techniques in practical settings. Upon completion, students will possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to investigate and address psychosocial issues within the workplace, offering support, advice, and utilizing psychometric tools effectively.

Rationale:

The rationale behind this qualification is to train students to work as Psychometrists. Upon successful completion of the Degree, practical component (elective module), and passing the required board examination by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), students can register as Psychometrists: Independent Practice. This empowers them to apply their psychometric skills in work environments effectively. Furthermore, students can also register as personnel practitioners with the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP). The qualification sets a solid foundation for students to pursue a Master's Degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, provided they meet all admission criteria.

By offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, this qualification not only prepares students for immediate roles in the workplace but also sets them on a path for further specialization and career advancement in the field of Industrial and Organisational Psychology.
