Purpose and Rationale

Qualification in English Literature and Linguistics

Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to enable students to develop scholarly knowledge of and insight into English literature and linguistics by studying:

  • Authors and texts from different periods and geographic locales
  • Identifying the specific nature and characteristics of texts in the major literary genres
  • The linguistic conventions and constructions of the English language in order to analyse English language data from a variety of perspectives, at different levels of linguistic organisation, and at increased levels of abstraction

Students will acquire insight into how literature and language produce and reflect cultural change and difference and be able to solve real-world language problems by applying linguistic knowledge and integrating knowledge of language with relevant neighbouring ancillary disciplines.

Rationale:

This Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BAHons) English qualification is intended to educate learners in the theory and practice of English to become relevant role players and practitioners in South African society. Graduates will be equipped to play an important role in problem-solving within various fields of specialisation related to English. The qualification aims to assist relevant role players, including potential employers, current students, and parents, in understanding the criteria determining job possibilities in the world of languages and humanities, specifically in English.

The term 'generic' indicates that the minimum outcomes and their Associated Assessment Criteria have been identified. The qualification standards have been developed abstractly, not bound by discipline-specific knowledge but by consensus on the depth and complexity of learning and competencies to be acquired by learners in such programmes.

This generic qualification standard proposes a minimum standard for the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Languages and Humanities, consisting of at least 128 Credits within the 'general track' of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Students are encouraged to build on this qualification for more complex postgraduate work, keeping in mind the level descriptors closely to progress to higher levels of study.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate advanced scholarly and scientific knowledge and understanding of approaches to, as well as terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules and theories typical to English at advanced level within the context of other African languages.
  2. Demonstrate ability to identify, analyse, and solve problems within the context of English in a critical and creative manner.
  3. Demonstrate the competency to search for, control, apply, analyse, and integrate knowledge independently, as well as to evaluate it in a responsible and well-grounded manner.
  4. Demonstrate their competency as effective learners who understand the need for life-long learning. Demonstrate the ability to report on research and communicate it in writing and orally, with the use of appropriate Information Technology (IT), to an audience of peers.
  5. Demonstrate critical evaluation of ethics and practices akin to the language of English.
  6. Articulate and communicate the value of being a competent and critical user of English within a vocational context as well as within a culturally-diverse South African and world population.

    • Apply appropriate methods or practices to resolve complex discipline-related problems and introduce change within related practice.
  4. Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior:

    • Show sensitivity towards societal and cultural considerations within an academic and discipline-related environment.
  5. Effectively communicate scientific understanding:

    • Express own opinions/ideas in written or oral arguments using appropriate discipline-related and academic discourse and technology.
  6. Demonstrate effective functioning in a team:

    • Manage learning activities and take responsibility for own learning progress as a member and/or leader in scientific projects or investigations.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Continuous formative assessment for feedback on progress towards specific learning outcomes.
  • Summative assessment focuses on Exit-Level Outcomes, including integrated assessments like mini-dissertations.
  • Integrated assignments assess achievement of the qualification's purpose and applied competence.
  • Innovative methods are used to integrate a wide range of knowledge, skills, competencies, and attitudes.
  • Assessment methods include written literature reviews, project reports, practical tests, oral presentations, and final exams.
  • Holistic assessment evaluates students' knowledge and interpretative skills comprehensively.
