Principles of Human Rights And Social Advocacy

Starting at ZAR 9350.00
8 weeks duration

This course broadly unpacks the components underlying human rights and examines its functionality within and between countries. Think more critically, formulate analysis, and work with theory and data.

Local and international human rights documents and discourses are generally characterised by conceptual and normative links between the aims of human rights and social advocacy. Human rights and social advocacy practices have become remarkably significant over time. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states that human rights are the ‘foundation’ of justice ‘in the world’ and many of its articles include democratic aspirations across the full institutional range of modern political societies (Hibbert, 2017). Through engagement of the theoretical basis of human rights and social advocacy, the course aims to enrich the students’ perspectives and skills regarding change and development. Put differently, the course cites the ways in which political power, freedom and democracy have a direct bearing on our everyday lives. Lastly, the course provides students with self-assessment activities and tasks geared towards deepening knowledge of the course.
